A New Sea Spray Generation Function for Wind Speeds up to 32 m s21

چکیده

The sea spray generation function quantifies the rate at which spray droplets of a given size are produced at the sea surface. As such, it is important in studies of the marine aerosol and its optical properties and in understanding the role that sea spray plays in transferring heat and moisture across the air–sea interface. The emphasis here is on this latter topic, where uncertainty over the spray generation function, especially in high winds, is a major obstacle. This paper surveys the spray generation functions available in the literature and, on theoretical grounds, focuses on one by M. H. Smith et al. that has some desirable properties but does not cover a wide enough droplet size range to be immediately useful for quantifying spray heat transfer. With reasonable modifications and extrapolations, however, the paper casts the Smith function into a new form that can be used to predict the production of sea spray droplets with radii from 2 to 500 mm for 10-m winds from 0 to 32.5 m s21. The paper closes with sample calculations of the sensible and latent heat fluxes carried by spray that are based on this new spray generation function.

Sea spray spume droplet production in high wind speeds

[1] Sea spray droplets are known to enhance the fluxes of momentum, heat, and mass at the air-sea interface. Evaluating these fluxes depends in part on the so-called “spray generation function”, the size distribution of droplets generated. At high wind speeds, spray is empirically observed to be plentiful near the ocean surface, however, the generation function has remained elusive both theoret...

Effects of Sea Spray on Tropical Cyclone Intensity

The intensity of tropical cyclones is sensitive to the rates at which enthalpy and momentum are transferred between sea and air in the high-wind core of the storm. Present models of the wind dependence of these transfer rates suggest that the effective drag coefficient is more than twice the effective enthalpy transfer coefficient at wind speeds above 25 m s21. Using this ratio in numerical mod...

A Sea State Parameterization with Nonarbitrary Wave Age Applicable to Low and Moderate Wind Speeds

A simple coupled flux and sea state model is developed. It is applicable to low, moderate, and high wind speeds, with a nonarbitrary wave age. It is fully consistent with an atmospheric flux parameterization. The flux model includes the influence of capillary waves on surface stress, which dominate surface stress on a waveperturbed surface for U10 , 7 m s21. The coupled model is verified for co...

A Flux Parameterization Including the Effects of Capillary Waves and Sea State

An air–sea interaction model that includes turbulent transport due to capillary waves (surface ripples) is developed. The model differs from others in that the physical premises are applicable to low wind speeds (10-m wind speed, U10 , 5 m s21) as well as higher wind speeds. Another new feature of the model is an anisotropic roughness length, which allows a crosswind component of the stress to ...

Simulation and Prediction of Wind Speeds: A Neural Network for Weibull

Abstract. Wind as a resource of renewable energy has obtained an important share of the energy market already. Therefore simulation and prediction of wind speeds is essential for both, for engineers and energy traders. In this paper we analyze the surface wind speed data from three prototypic locations: coastal region (Rotterdam), undulating forest landscape few 100 m above sea level(Kassel), ...
